Dear Friends of the Pumpkin Fair,
Welcome to the 48th Soham Pumpkin Fair!
The fair has been running since 1975 and last year we were able to give away £3,600 to the Staploe Education Trust's initiative: ‘Building Brass Roots’ - an initiative which aims to provide brass instrument tuition to all children in primary schools, with a link to the development of a youth ‘training’ band with Soham Comrades Band. We were very proud as this was a record amount in our 48-year history!
This year's beneficiaries are Soham Roller Hockey Club, Soham Brigade, 1st Soham Brownies and 4th Soham Brownies and our theme is ‘Let's Join a Club’ to link in with the beneficiaries. We intend to promote as many clubs and organisations in the town and surrounding area as we can and encourage people to explore what is available locally for them to meet new friends and possibly develop new interests and hobbies.
In the morning, we will be busy booking in entries for our various competitions: Pumpkins, sunflowers and other produce outdoors, arts and crafts indoors - look on our website or pick up our brochure to see what you can enter!
Then in the afternoon we open to the general public for viewing. This year our Mayor, David Woricker will open the fair and our first event of the afternoon is a Fancy Dress Competition based on our theme.
Ferret racing returns in our Arena this year. This always very popular with the crowds, but there is a serious side too - when they attend events, they represent the society as a ferret rescue, welfare and re-homing organisation. We also have Arena Displays by local groups including: Ely School of Irish Dancing, Boss Elite, Kuk Sool Won, Bounce Fit, Synergy Majorettes and Sawston Youth Group Band.
We are also delighted to have David Palmer back again this year, regaling us with his auctioneering skills. He will do his very best to encourage you to bid ever higher for our lots on offer. For those of you who don't know him, David is an experienced auctioneer and has also appeared on several TV programmes including Flog it, Bargain Hunt and Cash in the Attic. So, dig deep into those pockets and bid for the interesting lots we have on offer. See our website and Facebook page for more details nearer the day.
There will also be Vintage Vehicles, Bygones, Charity Stalls, a Funfair, a Hog Roast, Refreshments and our Prize Giving Ceremony to round off the afternoon.
We look forward to seeing you all there!
